General Information

Can I Use a Chimenea, Firepit or Barbeque Over my Artificial Grass?

No.

Although not flammable and compliant with British Standards Flammability Cert. (BS 4790), extreme temperature will result in your Artificial Lawn melting.

Health Risks associated with Artificial Grass? Here Are The Facts:

Artificial Grass used mainly as an alternative to grass sports pitches and fields, commonly referred to as ‘Astro’ and is the first thing people think of even now.

In order to protect the surface, weigh the product down, keep the surface cool, reduce abrasion etc… an infill was/is used.  Sand and a rubber crumb was the standard material (sometimes continues to be used).

Cases of skin infection (MRSA, Sepsis etc) are widely reported throughout the sporting community and are as a result of 2 contributing factors:

  • Close contact between athletes, particularly where/when skin has the potential to be ‘broken’ through grazes & cuts, and potential of cross-contamination
  • Rubber crumb

The simple fact is that rubber crumb used for infill is toxic in itself.  Additionally, it allows some forms of bacteria to be harboured

WE DO NOT USE RUBBER CRUMB FOR INFILL – WE ONLY USE SILICA SAND

This means a high drainage rate, removing anything of a chemical nature that may land on the surface of your lawn.  The, unlike rubber crumb, is not seen and is a natural product with zero toxicity levels.

How Environmentally Friendly is Artificial Grass

It is environmentally friendly.

Artificial Grass was previously not recyclable, however, that has changed and Companies now arrange for uplift and recycle, which is a major factor in the environmental discussion.  Additionally, the following factors are also factors to support the positive impact installation of Artificial Grass can have on the environment:

  • No watering required, saving local resource demand
  • No chemical fertilisers every season in a bid to have a constantly green lawn
  • No weed killing needed
  • No electricity or petrol used for mowing (MAJOR contributor to pollution – see below)
  • No grass waste choking our refuse sites

Dr Peter Westerholm, of Stockholm University, has found that just one-hour’s mowing produces the same amount of carcinogens as an average car does in a 150km drive.

Food for thought and even more reason to do your bit by having an amazing Artificial Lawn installed by Bold As Grass!

Where Can I Have Artificial Grass Installed?

ANYWHERE! Short & Sweet.

The absolutely crucial element is ensuring that your Artificial Grass is installed correctly, thereby protecting your investment. Some examples of where you could use Artificial Grass include:

  • Your Garden (existing turfed area, flower beds, barked, chipped, concrete…)
  • Balcony

  • On top of paving
  • Public communal areas
  • Roundabouts
  • Shops

Will My Artificial Grass Last?

Our ‘High 5’ range provides the best possible value from a hugely extensive range of options, meaning we offer you the highest tensile fibres and tufting whilst combining the softest and most realistic effects to suit every budget.  Each of our selected Artificial Grass products are designed to last well in excess of 10 years.  We understand that the process of selecting your Artificial Grass product is a daunting one, that’s why we’ve not bombarded you with options that are less durable or don’t look so realistic.  The overall life expectancy of your Artificial Lawn is largely dependent upon the type of use and amount of traffic experienced (people & pets), as well as climatic conditions.  The more traffic or extreme conditions, then we’d generally recommend a more expensive product due to the weight, pile thickness and stitch rate.  If you have less traffic, then having a less expensive option that will last just as long becomes a viable option, but it all boils down to personal preference.  The Artificial Grass product we provide has a UV resistance rating which ranges between 9 to 12 years; the amount and intensity of sunlight varies by region thus the reason for a range being provided.

Will My Artificial Grass Require Infill? (beware installers cutting corners…)

Yes.

Simply, it increases the life of your artificial lawn as well as improves its looks and performance.  The only advantage of not using sand infill is that it makes the installation cheaper.

This is why you’ll have some manufacturers/installers advising against using a sand infill, even when they say their product doesn’t need it.  They offer a cheaper installation price, with the sole intention of being awarded the job over other installers.

At Bold As Grass, our stance is that your Artificial Lawn should be seen as an investment in your property and agree with the fact that you should get the best value for money.  To do that, it’s important not to cut corners as doing so will guarantee a poor quality Artificial Lawn.

There’s no doubt that your key intention for installing Artificial Grass is to have you & your family enjoy a great looking lawn, free of mud, mess……..and maintenance!

BUT, if you can’t use your lawn due to a poor installation or short lifespan, you won’t get to experience any of those benefits and you’ll have wasted your hard-earned cash.

Will Weeds Grow on Artificial Grass?

Any provider that states Artificial Grass is weed free….exercise caution!  You will get weeds, but nowhere near the same extent as a real lawn and extremely easily dealt with.

Weeds will not come up through the weed barrier, if installed correctly. However, weeds can take hold in your Artificial Grass pile through wind-borne seed, as well as via birds/animals.  Brushing or pulling them out is all that’s needed to stay on top of it for the majority of the year.

We do provide an Aftercare Service, which will remove weeds and revitalise your Artificial Grass as well as significantly prolonging the look and life of your lawn.

Installation

Can I Have Artificial Grass Installed on my Sloping Garden?

Absolutely!

We can cover gardens that have a little traffic on slopes of 15 degrees and less, however, anything steeper we’d recommend no traffic.  Removing the need for having to maintain on steep slopes is a huge benefit and well within the capabilities of Artificial Grass fitted by Bold As Grass.

Our installation is technically different to that of a standard flat lawn, which we’ll discuss at the time of quoting.  Additional measures to prevent any movement in your Artificial Grass are used, which will give you peace of mind and brings us back to our ethos of ensuring you receive great quality at a great value rate!

Can I Lay Artificial Grass on Top of my Existing Lawn?

No – your old lawn will need removed as it’ll simply rot underneath your new Artificial Grass.  The surface will be uneven and not provide you with anywhere near the look you’re hoping for.

We will remove the grass and underlying soil before treating, compacting, laying appropriate drainage base, using weed prevention, levelling perfectly with a granite dust, further weed control and ensuring appropriate tension of the grass attached to perimeter edging, which we will also have installed.

Does Bold As Grass Install Products from Other Suppliers?

No, we do provide installation for any other products other than ones we supply.

There is a risk associated with installation of products sourced from elsewhere.  We work hard to ensure we have the best possible products in order to match our install service and workmanship, to ultimately provide you with a package delivered with uncompromised integrity.

How Do I Fit My Washing Line?

The position and preparation work for concrete pad for your ground spike should be completed in advance of your Artificial Grass install.  Retrospectively fitting a groundspike will risk the integrity of your lawn, weed control and sub-base and we would not recommend doing so.

Definitely a consideration and action point, well in advance of having your lawn fitted.

How Long Will It Take You To Install?

We’ll aim to complete your project within the shortest time possible…but we will not compromise on quality for you, therefore it may take slightly longer if you have additional features.  We do have a rule-of-thumb which may help you as an approximate guide:

  • 20 – 30 sq.m area may take 1-2 days
  • 35 – 50 sq.m area may take 2-3 days
  • 55 – 75 sq.m area may take 3-4 days
  • 75 – 100 sq.m area may take 4-5 days

Please note that timescales are dependant on the type of installation, access to working area, number of installers on your project and (of course!) the weather.

I Get Puddles in my Garden, Will Artificial Grass Get Rid of this Problem?

Yes.

Our artificial Grass is manufactured with high-frequency drainage punch-holes, meaning that your lawn is permeable. Hugely important in a downpour, but it also means that pets that use the garden will have urine flushed away extremely quickly and avoids any build up or smell.

If your garden is prone to flooding then you will need to advise us at the time of our initial visit, before quoting.  We can increase the drainage of your garden, but it means digging even deeper than normal and laying additional sub-base to allow the excess water to filter down, which does increase costs slightly.

In effect, we have the ability to solve an existing problem AND provide you with a long-term aesthetically pleasing addition to your home.

I Have A 5.5 Metre Wide Garden, But You Only Sell Certain Widths?

It’s a relatively simple solution, although we fully appreciate no-one likes waste!

By ordering a suitable length of 4m and 2m wide product, you have enough overlay to trim-in and produce a joint, ensuring full coverage of your garden.

Is it Easy to Install?

No, otherwise everyone would be doing it!

Capable individuals (as it’s not a 1-man job) who are competent DIY’ers would be able to follow our install instructions in our ‘Supply & Install’ section, although experience in laying does count significantly toward the end result.

Any lack in confidence, ability, access to the right tools or hesitation means you’ll probably be better getting in touch with us and we’ll do the job for you.

What Are The Widths and Lengths of Artificial Grass?

We have a great range of premium products on offer at Bold As Grass, with our objective of having something to suit every project and pocket, but without overburdening you with so many options that don’t actually offer much of a difference.

What Will It Cost?

Straight to one of the most important things!

Ultimately, the final cost is dependant on several factors, main ones being:

  • Product Choice (large variance in cost, which is enhanced if you’re looking at a larger area to cover)
  • Edging type (see our products page)
  • The surface you are looking to lay on i.e. replace existing lawn, lay on slabs or decking etc
  • The shape of the lawn perimeter and whether you have inset features

Compared to real turf (costing up to £6 per square metre), initial perception from those who are uninformed is that Artificial Grass is a more expensive option. We suggest you generate the right perception, much the same way you would at improvements such as installing raised beds, decking or slabs.  The truth is, the option of professionally fitting artificial grass is a fantastic investment. If you consider the time and effort involved in maintaining real grass, some of the long-term savings on the cost of artificial grass can be a great reward alongside the convenience and guaranteed great look all year round.

Our quality supply and installation process means you’ll end up with a fantastic asset to your home and garden that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Although difficult to accurately provide a general cost due to every job varying in size, shape and product type, we feel it’s important to be upfront and honest. Based on a 50sqm lawn with good access, a high quality and professional installation will be approximately £50-£65 per square metre. This price includes the home visit, equipment, groundworks and related material for preparation and fixing, Artificial Grass and, of course, labour. Contact us and we’ll happily visit and discuss your project in line with any budget constraints, offering you every solution we can to make sure you have the best possible value.

Kids & Pets

Pee & Poo…How Does Artificial grass Cope?

Valid question and one of the main reasons people are having Artificial Grass installed more and more these days.

Removal of solid waste, just as on a regular lawn and quick drainage of urine means quick and easy maintenance with no lingering issues.  If you are concerned, you have the added advantage of using a water-based detergent sprayed onto the area.  Rainwater will flush your lawn regularly through the drainage holes (over 50 per sq. m), preventing build up of smells from stale urine.  You can hose your Artificial Lawn during any particularly dry spells, should you be concerned or start to find smells building.

Additionally, we offer an Aftercare Service which is particularly popular amongst Pet owners.  Largely dependant on pet use and your preference, frequency can be 6-monthly or at any point you feel your Artificial Lawn needs a ‘Refresh’.  Just get in touch and we’ll book you in to have it looking as good as new!

Why is Artificial Grass Child Friendly?

Here are some of the reasons:

  • Artificial Grass products from Bold As Grass are soft (particularly our New Grand Fir & Albion Products) and advances in production means they’re not nearly as abrasive, reducing the risk when children (inevitably) fall.
  • Increased protection, aligned with the British Standards Critical Fall Height Certification BS EN1177, comes in the form of additional shockpad underlay. Perfect for playground areas.
  •  Just think, no mud from feet or paws dragged in through the house, especially throughout winter!  Clean boots and shoes, no matter the season.
  • Artificial Grass dries in a fraction of the time it takes real turf to dry, providing several advantages.  A quicker turnaround after a sun-shower, allowing play to resume.  Reduced risk of slips and falls….not just beneficial to the younger generation!  Of course, we’re back to the no mud, no mess advantage too!
Will My Dog Damage My Artificial Lawn if it Digs?

It genuinely doesn’t happen….and we can’t provide an adequate reason as to why they don’t try to dig on Artificial Grass!

The fact that we provide such a deep and sound sub-base may be the reason as it prevents any enticing smells coming to the surface, removing any allure or desire to dig and investigate.

We’ve no doubt that the urge to dig persists, just keep a watchful eye on your flowerbeds!

Maintenance

Can I Vacuum My Artificial Lawn?

Yes, you did read this right, and;

Yes, people have used their domestic hoover in an attempt to maintain their Artificial Grass.

Please, do not take Henry or Dyson out for a trundle in the back garden….he won’t thank you for it, and neither will your wallet!

If you want a superior check, clean and refresh then contact us for our Aftercare Service.

How Do I Keep My Artificial Grass Clean?

Due to the frequency of the drainage holes in your Artificial Grass backing, you should not have any issues with build up or smells.  If, however, you have a spillage and wish to remove immediately, the following options are available:

  • Let the weather do its job by allowing rainwater to wash away and clean the area
  • Use a hose to spray and do a similar job
  • Use a water-based detergent and spray over the area you want

Do Not use bleach or other form of harsh cleaning chemical such as Hydrogen Peroxide, Sodium Hypochlorite or Chlorine on your Artificial Grass.

Additionally, we offer an Aftercare Service that prolongs the life of your Artificial Lawn and keep it looking as good as the day it was installed.

What Maintenance is Required For My Artificial Grass?

Very little – that’s the beauty of it!

Leaf removal using a leaf blower and lifting the pile every 2-3 months using a stiff broom should be enough for general maintenance.

We do offer an Aftercare Service, which provides a superior ‘refresh’ and preparation for the coming months, keeping your investment in tip-top shape and getting more years than you’d otherwise get out of it.
